In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.
The late summer uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's older political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Discussions Taking Place
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several leading political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
